Three volumes. Ex- library - from the Lamont Library at Harvard College. Volumes 1 and 3 are in good condition but volume 2 is in poor condition externally. Each volume has a bequest label on the front pastedown stating that the book was bought with the income from the bequest of Samuel Shapleigh, late Librarian of Harvard College, and dated 25 Feb., 1832. Each volume is quarter bound in leather with quite heavy rubbing to the edges and corners a number of which have the covering worn away. The spines have four raised bands and 'Southerne's Plays,' the volume number, 'Harvard College Library' and '1774' all in gilt lettering. Rubbing to the surfaces of the front and rear panels. Library labels to the top left and top right corners of the front panels. Chipping and edge wear to the spines. Label residue to the rear pastedowns. The page edges are browned and there is some brown spotting to the pages at the front of each volume. Blind stamped with 'Harvard University Library' to the title pages. The pages are browned but otherwise largely unmarked. Volume I contains An Account of the Life and Writings of Thomas Southerne, The Loyal Brother; or, The Persian Prince, The Disappointment; or, The Mother in Fashion and Sir Anthony Love; or The Rambling Lady and has no specific faults other than those described above. Volume II has a detached front board, one inch missing from the surface of the spine at the top, including one of the raised bands, and some fraying to the edges at the bottom. It has no half-title or title pages. Bumping and fraying to the corners and along the bottom edges. It contains The Wives Excuse; or, Cuckolds Make Themselves; The Maid's Last Prayer; or, Any, Rather than Fail; The Fatal Marriage; or, The Innocent Adultery; and Oroonoko. Volume III contains The Fate of Capua; The Spartan Dame; Money the Mistress; and A Letter from the Earl of Orrery to Thomas Southerne. First printing.
