About this Item
298 pages. Illustrated, tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Vardon with facsimile autograph below, and 48 additional illustrations with posed and action photographs. One of the best hickory shaft era instructionals. Harry Vardon stunned American golfers during his 1900 Spalding-sponsored tour of the United States. A typical format was for Vardon to play the best ball of the home pro and best area golfer, Vardon winning almost every match played. No one had seen long distance driving before as Vardon could generate. It sparked Americans' desire to improve. At that very time, a young Francis Ouimet was swinging his first wee club, and would grow to defeat Vardon in the historic 1913 US Open. Dark green cloth covers clean. Two photograph plates are creased, pages 94-95 and 169-176 roughly split. Deckle edges toned. No former owner name or bookplate, pastedowns and endpapers clean and unmarked. I believe this is the earliest release of this title under the George W. Jacobs imprint, although he verso of the title page states "Printed in Scotland". The UK edition went through more than twenty editions and was published well into the 1930s. Covers protected in mylar. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 204496
