About this Item
First (and only?) edition. Oblong 8vo. [4], 175 pp. In the publisher's teal glazed cloth, gilt- and ink-stamped to boards and spine. With 94 illustrations in text. Mr. Bishop begins his work with the sentence, " First of our illustrations we place a map." This map exhibits the gradual accretion of provinces to the central domain of the lie-de- France, from Berry in 1100 to Savoy and Nice in 1861. And he adds, as a comment on the very significant list of dates, " During the great age of the development of architectural styles,' France' was a `geographical expression.' " He takes his subject chronologically, beginning with such Roman remains as the Theatre at Orange (Arausio), the Aqueduct at the Pont du Gard, and La Maison Carrie at Nimes (Nemansus). Byzantine influence is discussed. Then comes Norman and the styles that followed, with the later Classical reaction. All are amply illustrated. A scarce and entertaining work by the prolific reverend. In very good condition throughout. Prize plate to front pastedown. Seller Inventory # PS.521
