About this Item
A first edition of Les Pappillons showcasing Varin`s masterful copperplate engravings. Varin became a student of Charles and Geoffrey Rouargue Emile when he moved to Paris at a very young age, and gradually moved up the artistic ranks, preparing plates for Granville, then illustrating himself Droleries Vegetales and Les Papillons. He was well-known for his mixing of artistic mediums, as shown in this 2 v. set, which includes 35 plates of stunning hand-coloured copperplate engravings. The colours were probably done in watercolour. A few marks and some minor foxing to the contents, as usual. In a beautiful green quarter-leather binding with marbled boards, some wear to edges and corners, title to spine gilt, gilt-ruled. Small brown stains to the front endpapers of v.1, along with a small rip, a little chipping, and a crease. Browning to pages (mostly in margins), as usual. Stamp on the half-title of v.2. Otherwise a nice set and plates bright. An extremely rare 2 v. set of Les Pappillons illustrated beautifully in colour by Varin. Not dated, but presumed to be published around 1852. Text in French.
