Large octavo. X, 11-320pp. Original glassine over blind-stamped cloth with gold lettering on spine. Book housed in its publisher's slipcase, with gold lettering on spine. Remarkable work compiling the letters written by Francis Xavier, the pioneering Roman Catholic missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus who led an extensive mission into Asia. Xavier was influential in the spreading and upkeep of Catholicism most notably in India, but also ventured into Japan, Borneo, the Moluccas, and other areas which had thus far not been visited by Christian missionaries. The letters featured in this book were written during his stay in Japan. Sporadic creasing and closed tears on glassine. Text in Spanish. Glassine in overall fair, slipcase, binding and interior in very good condition. Seller Inventory # 31605
