About this Item
A pirated edition of early poems by Tennyson (1809-92) which the Poet Laureate had suppressed or revised in later editions of his work. The London bookseller John Camden Hotten advertised it as "the choice poems that have been dropped or thrown aside by the Poet during his literary career." Tennyson obtained an injunction stopping sales of the book, as well as a small financial settlement from Hotten. Compiled and edited by James Dykes Campbell (1838-95), the Scottish merchant, writer, and Coleridge biographer. Small octavo: viii, 112 p. Original printed blue paper wrappers. The edges are uncut and unopened. Just the slightest hint of foxing to the contents; else a crisp and bright example. Housed in a custom one-quarter blue morocco over blue cloth clamshell box.
