VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book. "Outre-Mer: Impressions of America" By Paul Bourget (Member of the French Academy). Illustrated with a tissue-guarded monochrome Frontispiece portrait of the Author with facsimile of his signature. This book is believed to be the First UK Edition, published by T. Fisher Unwin, London, 1985. Thick & heavy item. PLEASE NOTE: As this book is heavy (over 1 Kg with packaging), if you are buying this from outside the U.K. please expect additional shipping costs. Large 8vo, 22.9 cm x 15.6 cm x 3.6 cm, Green cloth-covered boards with gilt embossed lettering on front cover & spine, Top edge gilt, Tissue-guarded Frontispiece, Some rough-cut and unevenly sized pages, no dust-jacket. 425 pages. Weight: 890 Grams. CONTENTS ARE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION!!! However, there are several cracks forming between pages, including crack exposing hinges between pastedowns & endpapers at front & rear of book. Spine & cover are rather worn, grubby & marked, some small holes in cloth, spine slightly sunken in and bumped & scuffed either end, gilt dull, all edges worn. Corners are bumped & frayed, board exposed on one of them. Top edge is darkened & scuffed. Book plate & ink annotation on front pastedown. Slight damage to reverse of 1st endpaper. Ink annotion on 1st title page which is marked. Most pages have damp stain in bottom corner, similar stain on top corner & alongside spine of some pages. Frontispiece slightly marked on reverse. Tissue-guard creased. Some pages (very few) have corner folds/creases, and/or edge bumps/nicks/tears, and/or smudges/marks mostly in margins, and/or creasing alongside spine. 3 sets of 2 pages still attached alongside vertical edge: 259 to 262, 263 to 266, and 323 to 326. Light age tanning & occasional foxing throughout. VERY RARE ITEM, EXCELLENT CONDITION INSIDE!!! This book by Paul Bourget is a journal he wrote describing his views and experiences of America and its people during his time spent there in 1893. Contents: I: At Sea. II: The First Week.
