About this Item
Quarto. This original August 16, 1774 issue of the London Chronicle features a back-page letter from a gentleman in Chestertown Maryland, site of the Chestertown Tea Party, in Kent County, on Maryland's Eastern Shore, to a friend in Boston, speaking of the rising tensions between the American Colonies and England. He informs his friend that a town meeting had just concluded and the citizens of Chestertown have pledged to send their support and money to the Patriots of Boston, whose port had been shut down by George III through the Boston Port Act, one of the Intolerable Acts passed by Parliament in retaliation for the Boston Tea Party. "Twenty-five Gentlemen were appointed a Committee of Correspondence, among whom I have the honor to be named; After the business was over, a subscription was proposed to the committee, which was most cheerfully adopted, and they subscribed some 20L, others 10L, and none less than 5L to be laid out in provisions, and forwarded to the use of such poor people as are reduced to necessity by the cruel hand of oppression." Other reports on the same page from Newport and Boston tell of the crisis before the Sons of Liberty and other American colonists - "Life and death, or, which are tantamount thereto, Liberty and Slavery are now before them, and it is in their power to chuse which they please." This historic 18th-century piece is complete in eight pages, with mild wear and a touch of foxing. PERFECT for framing and display!! #1S-061. Seller Inventory # 17809
