About this Item
First Edition (NAP). You can see the covers in the photos. They've held up quite well. There is a little bit of rubbing/fading off the front bottom edge and just adjacent to the spine. The gilt lettering on the front and on the spine is quite bright. The spine ends have just a little bit of crinkling, no tears. The edges are in very good shape. The corners have only mild rubbing, no rub-through. The top page edge is gilt. It's very clean and shiny. The middle and bottom page edges are both deckled or rough-cut. They did a decent job of it, but as is most often the case there are few pages with a rougher edge than the others. The book is square. The spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The first front end paper is very slightly pulled away from the half-title page just over the 1st inch off the bottom edge. The pages solidly bound. There is an old signature on the blank first and paper ( 'Lee K. Smith, April 1899' ). There is no other writing to be found anywhere else in the book. I did find three consecutive pairs of facing pages that had some light spotting at their white outer margins, not reaching the print. I went through the rest of the pages pretty carefully and didn't see a recurrence of this. I saw only a very few other small spots of soiling on the rest of the pages. I found a 1 1/4 inch tear of the outer edge of one page, not reaching the print. I didn't see any other tears. I found a group of pages with a teeny tiny crease at the very top tip of their corners, not much of anything. There are no markings in the book and no attachments of any kind. The essays by Mr. Runciman focused a good deal on opera and choral music. Some of the composers whose works are analyzed: Henry Purcell, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Schubert, Verdi, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Weber, and Wagner. Seller Inventory # 003972
