The Erie Railroad was founded in 1832 to build a rail line connecting eastern New York and the Hudson River with Lake Erie in the west. This history is very thorough and the author provides a wealth of information on the development of this line and the peope who were involved, and is essential for understanding the history of this line. Contains a number of illustrations, some full page photos of important personages, facsimilies of documents, charts, two maps, etc. The frontis illustration is a color reproduction of a resolution by the City of New York in 1855. The railroad was in operation until 1960 when it merged with the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. This is a large, heavy book that has been rebound using period black pebbled facsimilie leather with gilt spine lettering; the original maroon cover with gilt lettering is laid over the new front cover; all edges are gilt. It is a very durable and pleasing binding--useful for another century or two. The contents are unmarked and have no writing or underlining. A nice clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings. This book will require additional postage for Priority shipping or International shipping because of its size and weight.
