First Edition. Red cloth-backed boards over cream boards with black title lettering at the spine. With the excellent pictorial dust-jacket, unclipped, slightly chipped at ends of the spine and corner tips. 8vo. pp vi + 154, Large folding map in the back and single page map at the front, both in excellent, untorn condition. Highly uncommon. In December 1941 a small group set out for the Hukwang Valley in the dense forest of the north west Burma. The expedition returned to its base in Upper Burma on 1st March 1942 after reaching the Naga mountains and covering a distance of some 500 miles. In the meantime the war in southern Burma had spread to the North and in May 1942 another group arrived beleaguered in the Naga Valley, this time made up of scores of refugees. Hampered by appalling monsoon weather, without shelter, and with limited food supplies, thousands of weary people fleeing from the Japanese invasion of Burma, slogged along for hundreds of miles, crossing mountains and impassable terrain, heading or the llittle town of Ledo on the other side of the border, in Assam.
