About this Item
1st Edition, 8vo (19cm), 228pp, original silk covers, rebacked in leather with gilt titiles. Fresh endpapers. Ink stamp of Stromness owner to half-title. pp.11-115 consist of historical pieces and 'nautical reminiscences', the remainder of the book contains poetry and songs. Binding tight and secure. Scattered light foxing. Generally very clean throughout. A scarce miscellany of verse and prose by a Scottish poet. David Vedder (1790 1854) was born in Deerness, near Kirkwall, Orkney. Receiving little or no education, and being 'pretty well grown before he could read or write' (Grant Wilson, Poet and Poetry of Scotland), he ultimately mastered French, Italian, and German. Orphaned young he went to sea and at twenty-two became captain of a Greenland whaler, which he commanded for several years. In 1815 he was appointed first officer of an armed cruiser, and in 1820 became a tide-surveyor, officiating successively at Montrose, Kirkcaldy, Dundee, and Leith. Seller Inventory # 1486
