About this Item
Small Volume of Three Nineteenth Century French plays Hardcover (board; abraded), pages condition good. Little foxing or staining. Gilt lettering on red label on spine Nouvelle Suite . 5 1/8 x 4 7/8 x ¾ inches Collector s stamp on flyleaf Volume contains three melodramas in French by different authors and two different publishers, all performed for the first time in Paris in December, 1835. 1.L Honneur de Ma Fille, drama in three acts by M. Ad. D Ennery, pp. 1-98. First performed at Théâtre de l Ambigue-Comique, 17 December, 1835. Published by Bureau du Théâtre français, Berlin. A lively tale of illicit, ill-fated passion, mistaken identities, actual and feigned madness; references to class distinctions and many references to Honor . The daughter retains hers, as does her intended, a lowly worker. 2.La Femme du Peuple, drama in two acts and additional choruses by MM. Dumersan and Alexandre, pp. 99-174. First performed in Paris at Théâtre des Variétés, 1 December, 1835. No publisher given. In the manner of a television sit-com, family disputes erupt as a father tries to marry off his daughter against her will to an old, dull, ugly but rich man. A passing Duchess is also about to sign a marriage contract until her intended confesses to having killed a man; all is well thanks to the intervention of the young woman s mother, an honest, determined model of human behavior and values, even though she is only a woman of the people. 3.Un Coup de Canne, vaudeville drama in three acts by M. Wanderbruck and M. Valory, pp. 1-124 (not in sequence with previous chapters). First performed in Paris at Théâtre des Folies Dramatiques, 6 December, 1835. Published by Bureau du Théâtre français, Berlin. Yet another tumultuous tale of star-crossed lovers, though more identifiably embedded in the events of the day (Napoleon s downfall and the Franco-Austrian war). A deaf woman s mishearings are ribaldly funny, there are threatened duels, disinheriting, threats of deportation, collision of armies but a feel-good resolution settles ancient enmities, shares wealth and provides for the ultimate union of the two young lovers.
