Original printing of these early accounts of Canyon de Chelly & other Ancestral Pueblo sites by trained archaeologists working with the Smithsonian, including architecture, petroglyphs, pottery, and human remains, extracted from the Bulletin of the Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories, Vol. II, No. I. Both Holmes & Jackson were important explorers & artists influential in bringing knowledge of western features & peoples to the American east, particularly with their models of these ruins shown in 1876 at the Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia and through Jackson's celebrated photographs; Bessel, who wrote technical descriptions of human remains found by Holmes & Jackson's parties, is best remembered for his role in the doomed Polaris expedition, during which he may have poisoned the leader. Original front cover (first page, heavily rubbed?) bound in hardcovers long ago, but still after hard use. Worn & soiled, with ink name & note, pencil note, stains on front cover, lower corner missing/mended, some internal stains & creasing, page 15/16 misbound but present between pages 18 & 19, short tear to folding map.
