Professionally rebound in brown cloth, with gilt title on the spine, Minor shelf-wear to cover including light scuffs and marks, with faint wear along the corners. Pages themselves are clean and unmarked with light foxing. Pen inscription from previous owner on front end-paper and title page. Ex-library copy with some library stamps on title page and the Author's Note before the Preface, and also scattered throughout on a dozen pages. Peter Squire was born in Bedfordshire, England. In 1812 he apprenticed at a chemist and druggist and in 1820s, he joined Brandram & Stead, a wholesale druggist in London. Later in life he was chemist by appointment to Queen Victoria, and published a Companion Pharmacopoeia which ran to nineteen editions, and specialist pharmacopoeias for the London hospitals.
