This is a very rare two (2) volume set of 18th century leather bound world geography reference books by Charles Middleton.Folio size. The set is a first edition {World map in volume one dated 1778; Map of Europe in volume two dated 1777} and was published in London, England in 1777 and 1778. Filled with outstanding copperplate engraved maps and scenes. Folio size. Dimensions: 9.75" W x 14.25" H x 2.125" D (one volume). Two large heavy folio hardbacks in full calf. Raised bands. Gilt ( worn) decorated spines with red leather title panel, black leather volume number panel and plain end papers. Title pages printed in red and black. All plates (including maps) present + 546 pages plus list of subscribers + 548 pages incl. Index. Good condition with shelf wear expected for book of this age. Front covers have become detached along with a couple of pages. The interiors of both volumes are in very good condition (must not have been used much). We found only one other complete two volume set for sale. There is also a half set (one vol.) for sale. Only four libraries in the world have the two vol. set! If you are an antiquarian book lover, map lover or geographer this set will be a great addition to your collection. These are heavy books and will require addt'l shipping expense.
