First edition. Volume 5 only. Octavo. Contemporary half roan over speckled paper-covered boards, the spine ruled in gilt. Illustrated with four engraved plates, with tissue-guards, beautifully hand-coloured by Lazaretti. 394pp. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with some loss to the spine label, rubbing to the spine and joints, and wear to the corners. The contents with an old water mark to the top margin of the first 60 pages or so, a few small stains to the edges of pp.261-268, and some light scattered foxing are otherwise in very good order. The plates themselves are clean and bright, the colours remaining vivid. The fifth volume from this wonderfully illustrated Italian edition of Cook's voyages published between 1816 and 1817, which ultimately comprised seven volumes. The title translates as "Cook's Navigations on the Great Ocean and Around the Globe, to serve as an introduction to the collection of the most interesting voyages undertaken after that famous Navigator in various parts of the world". The present volume predominantly concerns Cook's second voyage, undertaken between 1772 and 1775, and so largely focusses on New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Seller Inventory # 1219
