About this Item
Stated First Edition. Nice opportunity to own this biography in a very decent dust jacket. You can see the blue covers in the photos. There is one light stain off the top edge of the rear. I don't see any other soiling. The edges and corners are in very good shape. So are the spine ends. The silver lettering on the spine is very bright. The book looks perfectly square and the spine is straight. The pages are nicely tight throughout and the covers are nicely tight as well. The interior of the book looks very good. I've scrolled through the pages a number of times and haven't yet found any instances of soiling. I'm also not seeing any conspicuous creasing. There are no markings. The only attachment is a tiny bookseller label off the bottom edge of the blank first front end paper ( 'The Bookshelf, Worcester, Massachusetts' ). No one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've rated it Very Good, taking into account its age. It's not perfect, but it presents pretty nicely. It is toned. It has a very thin tear off the top front edge. Mr. Gladstone has a few small pinkish spots of color on his face. I'm guessing that they don't belong there (although his nickname was Pinky, possibly not). There is a small scuff just to the left of the 'G' in Gladstone on the front. There are two small losses at and around the bottom edge of the spine and a sliver of loss at the top edge of the spine. There's another small thin tear at the bottom edge of the rear cover. All four flaps are clipped, however the original price is unaffected. There is a thin crease of the bottom edge of the rear flap. There is light toning at the margins of the flaps, but they are, as a whole, in rather good condition. The lettering there is blue. I've always had the jacket in a fitted protective cover. From the dust jacket: 'A liberal yet a fundamentalist, a man who refused a title but allowed no one to drop the "Mr.", Gladstone represented his age in all its contradictions. Perhaps that is why he was called "the foremost Englishman of the nineteenth-century." His conscience was all-powerful; but "his conscience" as Disraeli said, "was often his accomplice." Here is Gladstone, the personage and the statesman, against the background of the social, economic, political, religious and intellectual environment of his time. Unlike other biographers the author recognizes the real values of the Victorian age; he regards his subject with that critical sympathy which alone can reveal the truth. The author is Professor of History at Princeton University.' 'Walter Phelps Hall received his bachelors degree from Yale University and his PhD from Columbia University. He was a very popular professor among Princeton undergraduates during the first half of the 20th century. He was known for occasionally standing on his desk while giving lectures. Hall specialized in British and European history.'. Seller Inventory # 003785
