1845. First edition. [iii], 572pp. and a 5 page publisher's catalogue dated May 1845. Reverend Samuel Abraham Walker described himself as a man unknown to fame, and of no higher standing in the Church, or the world, than the pastor of a small rural parish in Ireland. He felt duty bound to become a missionary, and chose West Africa for his work. This volume consists of an introduction, extending to nearly 200 pages, presenting a sketch of Western Africa, a history of the slave trade, an account of the esarly African churches, and a survey of African missions by Romanists and Protestants, from the 15th century to the mid-19th century. The subsequent portion of the volume recounts the labours of the Church Missionary Society in those regions. It is a judicious and candid summary, concentrating a large amount of information, which could no be derived from its more primary sources without much cost and labour. The book is bound in the original purple-brown cloth covered boards although an old home-made type of repair has been carried out on the spine. This has meant that the original spine (if retained) has been covered in a thickish green-brown paper or cloth that extends about 1/2" onto the boards, and is tight-bound onto the spine of the book. There is no titling on the spine. The repair may not be the most attractive, but it has served its purpose in preserving the book. The original boards have shelf wear with some soiling and fading and the spine ends and corners are bumped. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and a little scattered light foxing. The pages are slightly browned and the top edge of the book is dusty, and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the top margin. The half-title page has some soiling and there is an inscription on the reverse of the front free endpaper. The front and rear endpapers are browned with some soiling and split down the spine gutters. Seller Inventory # AfricaWest116
