Seller: Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB., London, United Kingdom
First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "With the compliments of the author, Gertrude Foggitt, June 18 1930". Gertrude Bacon (1874-1949), later Foggitt, was an aeronautical pioneer and woman of science known for achieving a number of "firsts" for women in aeronautics. Bacon "was the first woman in England to make a proper ascent in a balloon. the first woman to be a passenger when a loop was being looped", and the first ever passenger in a seaplane (Hartley, p. 56). Her father John Mackenzie Bacon (1846-1904) was an astronomer and early aeronaut who pioneered the flying of air balloons, and her fascination for flying was fostered by accompanying him on aeronautical expeditions. Also a noted astronomer and botanist, she was an original member of the British Astronomical Association and, as told in these memoirs, joined its expeditions to observe total solar eclipses in Lapland (1896), India (1898), and North Carolina (1900). Cathy Hartley, A Historical Dictionary of British Women, 2003. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt and front cover lettered in blind. With portrait frontispiece and 15 half-tone photographic plates. Spine gently bumped and cocked, rubbing to extremities, a few marks to covers, contents slightly foxed. A very good copy.
