About this Item
First Printing. In 493 the Northern Wei chose Loyang as their new capital. Built by imperial decree, it grew rapidly to over half a million people. Forty-one years later the dynasty collapsed and the city was abandoned at three days notice. Yang Hsuan-chih in 547 wrote the earliest surviving substantial description of a Chinese city, which translation forms the second part of the book. The first part considers Yang's reasons for writing; outlines the development of the Northern Wei's capital cities; examines the causes of the move to Loyang and the building of the new city; surveys the turbulent political events that shaped and destroyed it, as well as the city's internal structure and place in the wider social, economic and political system; and asks what kind of city it was that could go from nothing to half a million to nothing again in only forty-one years. Book is in very good condition, with price-clipped dust jacket that has a few chips and tears and wear to bottom of spine, with bumped bottom corners. Seller Inventory # 004650
