1897. First edition. xciv, [ii], 475pp., 1 page of errata, a frontispiece and 1 other portrait, and a folding pedigree in a pocket at the end of the book. Charles Cardale Babington (1808-1895) was an English botanist and archaeologist. He was a member of several scientific societies including the Botanical Society of Edinburgh, the Linnean Society of London (1853), the Geological Society of London, the Royal Society (1851), and in 1833 he participated in the foundation of the Royal Entomological Society. His best known works are his 'Manual of British Botany' (1843), 'Flora of Cambridgeshire' (1860), and 'The British Rubi' (1869) . As the title suggests, this work has been divided into three sections - Memorials and Reminiscences; Journal; and Botanical Correspondend - in the hope that it may appeal to every class of reader. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. This is an ex-library copy and has some of the usual stamps and marks. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. The spine ends and bottom corners are bumped and there is a reference number written in black near the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with the wording 'From the Publishers' written on the front free endpaper. The principal library indications are on the front endpapers that have remains of removed labels and two stamps, one overlaid with a 'withdrawn' stamp, on the front fixed endpaper. There are two similar stamps on the back of the title page. These appear to be the only library marks but it is possible that a small stamp has been missed elsewhere within the book.
