From title-page: "Memoirs of the Reign of Queen Elizabeth from the Year 1581 till her Death in which the secret Intrigues of her Court, and the Conduct of her favourite, Robert Earl of Essex, both at Home and Abroad, are particularly illustrated. From the Original Papers of his intimate Friend, Anthony Bacon, Esquire, and other Manuscripts never before published." Important work on Elizabeth I by the English historian Thomas Birch (1705-1766). Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII, she was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Includes 30 page Index at rear in Vol. II. Ex-libris of Joseph Neld on inside of front board. Title-label on both volumes missing, both black leather labels with gilt lettering on spine present, as issued. Label on Vol. II slightly chipped. Minor age wear and staining on binding. Joints of front spines cracked with split at head of front spines and back cover of volume two detached but present. Starting at inside front cover of volume one.
