About this Item
1885. First edition. xvi, 418pp., a frontispiece portrait and 2 pages advertising other works. David King (1806-1883) was a Scottish divine. He matriculated at Aberdeen University in 1820, but after a year was transferred by his parents to Edinburgh University. In 1830 he became minister of the first united secession church of Dalkeith, and removed to Greyfriars secession church, Glasgow, in 1833. At Glasgow began a systematic series of missions to the poor; was the first to establish homes for poor boys there; and set up classes for the instruction of young men in both sacred and secular subjects. In 1848 his health gave way, and he employed his enforced leisure in visiting Jamaica and making a tour through the United States, returning to Scotland in the following year. In 1860 he moved to London, and founded a presbyterian congregation there, and laboured in this quarter, amid many discouragements, till 1869. He still preserved his connection with the united presbyterian church in Scotland, and was chosen moderator of the synod of that body in 1863, taking a prominent share in the movement (1863?73) for the union of the free church of Scotland, the reformed presbyterian church, the united presbyterian church, and the presbyterian church in England. In March 1869 he accepted a call to the small congregation of Morningside, near Edinburgh, but in February 1873 he was forced to resign all ministerial work. King's popularity as a preacher overshadowed his reputation as a writer, though the few books which he wrote were very successful. This memoir of his life and work has been prepared by King's wife and daughter, and also includes eleven of his sermons. The book is bound in the original dark-blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards and some staining around and near the bottom spine corner of the front board. Thecorners are lightly bumped with a little damage to the cloth on the tips of the bottom corner. The spine ends are more heavily bumped with a little damage to the cloth on the bottom of the spine and some damage with a little loss to the cloth at the top of the spine. The titling on the spine is worn. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks. There is no inscription. Seller Inventory # gScotRel33
