Max Beerbohm's "Mainly on the Air". This is the First American Edition, published in 1947 by Alfred Knopf FROM THE DUST-JACKET : "Max Beerbohm was born in London on August 24, 1872. He was educated at the Charterhouse and Merton College, Oxford, and before leaving the university was already known as an essayist, wit, and gifted cartoonist. After graduating from Oxford, he illuminated the London literary scene as one of the brilliant lights of the 'Yellow Book'. Following a visit to the United States in 1898, he succeeded George Bernard Shaw as dramatic critic of the Saturday Review. In 1919 he married Florence Kahn, an American who was a well-known actress of the English stage, and settled in Italy. At the outbreak of the Second World War he returned to England, remaining there for the duration, and made over the BBC numerous broadcasts designed to strengthen British morale (six of which appear in this book). He was knighted in 1939." **************************************** BROADCASTS :: LONDON REVISITED (1935) / SPEED (1936) / A SMALL BOY SEEING GIANTS (1936) / MUSIC HALLS OF MY YOUTH (1942) / ADVERTISEMENTS (1942) / PLAYGOING (1945) / A NOTE ON THE EINSTEIN THEORY (1923) / FROM BLOOMBURY TO BAYSWATER (1940) / OLD CARTHUSIAN MEMORIES (1920) / THE TOP HAT (1940) / FENESTRALIA (1944) / T.
