Seller: Clarel Rare Books, Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A.
Publisher's cloth. Condition: Very Good. Publisher's original gilt-stamped and decorated blue cloth. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, with the footnote on page 119 repeated on page 120, and with the misattributed sketch [From "Hospital Days"] on page 299. Peach endpapers and triple flyleaves. There is some wear to the spine ends, fraying to the corners and edges, and the gilt is not as bright as it once was. Internally, there is a spot of ghosting on pages 174 and 175 where a leaf, perhaps, was laid in. Else, internally, the book is quite clean. An inch and a half of the foot of the rear inner hinge is just starting; else the joints and hinges are intact. Significantly, this is one of only several hundred copies in the First State with GILT EDGES. Copies in cloth with plain edges outnumber those with gilt edges by about twelve to one. A good to very good copy of an uncommon and desirable binding variant. Only the three-quarter morocco binding is rarer. BAL 3364. Seller Inventory # 000135
