Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Short stories. First edition, second state. Covers rubbed and worn, corners and spine ends bumped and frayed, spine darkened, big chip from bottom. Bookplate inside the front cover with scars from previously removed bookplate, gift inscription on the first endpaper, that endpaper badly torn and chipped, other ink owner names in the preliminary pages. Newsprint Twain speech pasted to the rear endpaper, staining the last page of the text. Binding tight, hinges good. Seller Inventory # 018970

All edges gilt. Light peach endpapers. First edition, second state, with footnote on page 119 not repeated on page 120 and with no "Hospital Days" skit on page 299. Collects 63 sketches and short pieces. Minor wear to binding extremities, 1 inch stain mid-gutter on front endpapers. Occasional soiling and staining throughout. Dark area offset from small old newspaper clipping about the Landon's and Olivia. A very good copy. In the very uncommon half morocco subscriber's binding. Tall octavo (22cm); publisher's blue decorated cloth, titled in gilt on spine and front cover; pale tan (Blanck states "peach") endpapers; 320 pp; illus. Slight rubbing at spine ends and board corners; a hint of oxidation to spine gilt, still a remarkably bright, clean copy, Near Fine. Neat ink ownership signatures to front and rear pastedowns of a Jean Poore Ray. Illustrated throughout after original line drawings by True Williams. Twain's second collection of short fiction, comprised mostly of pieces that had previously appeared in periodicals but also including (per Twain's Preface) several works not previously published, including "Learned fables for Good Old Boys and Girls," the "Jumping Frog Restored." etc. BAL 3364.
