London, W. Stansby für R. Meighan, 1635. Kl.-Folio. 13 Bl., 304 S. mit 2 großen Textkupfern (Karten), 2 großen Textholzschnitten u. 5 Münzdarstellungen, 7 Bl. Moderner Leder unter Verwendung alter Deckelbezüge u. des alten goldgeprägten Rückenschildes. Seltene erste Ausgabe der Abhandlung, die der englische Jurist John Selden (1584-1654) bereits 1617 verfaßt hatte, aber erst 1635 erstmals veröffentlichte. Es war die Antwort auf Hugo Grotius Abhandlung "De mare libero", in der der Holländer dafür plädierte, daß das Meer allen Völkern gemeinsam gehöre und von allen Schiffen frei befahrbar sei. In Selden fand Grotius seinen "grand antagoniste Anglais" (Ter Meulen), der für ein Mare clausum plädierte. Er meinte damit jedoch noch nicht alle Ozeane, sondern die die britischen Inseln umgebenden Meere, die allerdings relativ weit gefaßt wurden. Letztlich setzte sich mit der Zeit Grotius' Anschauung durch, während Seldens Auffassung von den Zeitläuften überholt wurde und gerade die englische Seemacht weltweit die Meere befuhr und Handel betrieb. - Die beiden gestochenen Karten zeigen die britischen Inseln und England, die großen Textholzschnitte schematisch die von den Angeln errichteteten Befestigungen mitsamt ihren römischen Namen, außerdem Asia, Insulae und Hellespont als allegorische Figuren. - Graesse VI,343; Termeulen 541, Anm. 11; vgl. Cat Scheepvart Mueum 942 (irrig 1625). - Etwas gebräunt u. meist schwach wasserrandig, wenige Randläsuren. Fast durchgehend mit mehreren Wurmstichen im Fußsteg.
