A map illustrating the first exploration of the Sydney basin, drawn by William Dawes, a Marine officer who sailed on the Sirius in the First Fleet to Botany Bay in 1788. Known for his keen interest in astronomy, he took astronomical observations on the mainland as well as surveying for the new town of Sydney. The map shows coastal surveys and the attempts at inland exploration during the first three years of settlement. This was published in John Hunter's "An Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson." London 1793. It is often found trimmed or foxed in the book - this copy is exceptional. The map was tabbed into a book along a fold and as a result, all edges of the map are untrimmed, which is quite unusual. A hint of foxing along one fold, a tiny separation at a fold intersection, and two separations on folds archivally repaired. Overall, by far the nicest copy of this map we have ever seen. Printed area 21 3/8 x 16 5/8", platemark 22 1/2 x 17 1/2", untrimmed paper 24 x 19 1/4".
