About this Item
1/110 unnumbered. Folio. 30 (2)pp., 8 plates with tissue guards. Original white cloth with gilt-stamped emblem on cover. Gilt top edge. Frontispiece. Title page printed in red and black with vignette. Decorative initials in color. Jewelry of the German Queen Gisela crowned on September, 21, 1024, and German Empress and wife of Konrad II., emperor of the Roman-German Reich, since March 26, 1927. It was found in 1880 during construction of a canal in Mainz and traveled through a number of collections until it was donated to the Deutsche Museum around 1912 by the German Emperor. The jewelry was found in excellent condition and is considered to be of superb artistic and art historical value as an important example of German Profane Art of the High Middle Ages. The plates show beautifully crafted jewelry and regalia reproduced in b/w lithography on seven plates at rear and color reproductions of six items on the frontispiece. In addition, the volume is illustrated with twenty-six b/w offset reproductions of crowns, regalia, jewelry, mosaics and illuminations, and expertly described by the German art historian Otto von Falke. Contains descriptive list of in-text illustrations at rear. Text in German. Binding with light wear along edges and very light staining, rubbed. Small blue ink stamp of previous owner on free front endpaper. Frontispiece slightly wavy with some foxing on tissue guard. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.
