Publisher's Victorian decorative dark green cloth boards with bright gilt titles to spine and front, 225 x 155 mm approx. Original pale yellow made end papers, viii + 190 pp + 2 of publisher's adverts. Portrait, vignette title page + 12 illustrations by S.L.Fildes as called for. First book edition 1870 with saw tooth border around front cover and all other first issue points. Good (Book- cloth rubbed at extremities with some fraying especially to head and tail of spine, previous owner book plate to front paste down- Adolphus William Ward late Master of Peterhouse Cambridge with later same family book plate to free front end paper - daughter and son in law Cynthia and John Barnes - Sir John was late British Ambassador to The Netherlands and previously Israel. rear end paper starting- mull and sewing cords holding, pencil notes from a reading to rear paste down and occassional margin marking of such references, moderate foxing to prelims with occassional soiling, glue is beginning to fail to back strip with consequential straining to some signatures).
