Some wear to extremities with rubbed spots on the edges, wrappers ever so lightly soiled, paper spine label most all gone, inscription at bottom of front blank (Mose/S/2), couple of small black marks on rear wrapper, occasional marginal marks, usually a line, in the last essay, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. "We are convinced that the impulse for modernization comes from science and technology. In the modern age this scientific way of thinking has become so prevalent all over the world that traditional religion and morality, which have a value system based on human introspection, are gradually crumbling under its impact. Especially inJapan, where modernization has meant mainly Westernization, this break with the tradition has been most severely and clearly felt in the loss of morality. We published this issue because of our concern with the cultural crisis in the world today." [from the Preface] Articles in this issue include the following: On Things Japanese by Masaaki Kosaka; The Ambivalent Nature of Modernization in Japan by Ryoen Minamoto; On Modernization and Tradition in Japan by Yasushi Kuayama; The Structure of Contemporary Japanese Mentality by Yashushi Kuyama; and On Modernization and Tradition in Japan by Keiji Nishitani. An important collection of essays on the modernization of Japan. Seller Inventory # 009262
