xxiv,[25]-559pp. plus 82 plates and [5] fold-out plates. Original brown cloth, stamped in blind. Spine cover is lacking and book has separated into three sections. A worthy candidate for repair, but should be done to the taste of the next owner. Light toning, scattered foxing. The second, supplemented, edition of this Confederate published guide to soldiering and the art of war, with 82 plates not in the first edition of the previous year. Gilham served in the Confederate Army and was a teacher at the Virginia Military Institute. His manual covers topics such as instructions for skirmishes, target practice, marching, and army organization. This edition features an addendum with eighty-seven plates illustrating items such as proper shooting positions, order in battery, and sketches of artillery.
