About this Item
36pp. Original publisher's orange pictorial wrappers. Housed in recent custom calf-backed marbled paper gatefold case. Rubbed and lightly marked, chipping to spine and wrapper edges, short tear to foot of lower panel. Title page a trifle marked and dusty. The first edition of a chapbook collection of poetry, chiefly in the Northumberland dialect, by Tyneside collier Marshall Cresswell (1833-1889). A second edition, extended to include 'From Dudley Colliery to Borneo', Cresswell's account of his time as a sinker in Sarawak (previously serialised in the Newcastle Courant, 18th January - 12th April, 1878), appeared in 1883. The collection includes 'Morpeth Lodgins', recipient of the first prize in one of publisher John W. Chater's annual songwriting competitions; and 'A Pitman's Visit te Rio de Janeiro', that records part of Cresswell's voyage to Borneo. OCLC records a single copy (North Carolina); COPAC adds no further. Size: 8vo. Seller Inventory # AQ24614
