About this Item
First issue of Cooper's seminal literary journal, often considered the first "punk" poetry periodical. From the intro: "Let us introduce ourselves. We're not fifty year old patrons of the arts. We're young punks just like you, and just because Kenneth Rexroth's got a name in some crowds doesn't mean wink's gonna get his rickety old crap in here. He comes through the back door like everyone else." Co-editor Glaeser would leave after the first two issues, but Cooper would keep Little Caesar as a forum for punks, poets, and like-minded artists and creators for another six years. An avowed and early punk, Cooper found kinship in his peer across the country, Eileen Myles, and Myles' similar excitement in funneling the same sort of drive that was spawning DIY punk bands across the country into poetry mags. From Daniel Kane's Do You Have a Band? Poetry and Punk Rock in New York City: "Recalling how Cooper sent her copies of Little Caesar through the mail when Cooper was still out in LA and she sent Cooper copies of her little magazine dodgems from her perch in New York, Myles offered: 'It really seemed like, in lieu of having a band, you did a magazine that got your model out there of who and what you had in mind. You know? Then you put yourself in it.' Cooper's response? 'Yeah, totally. Totally.'" While later issues of Little Caesar are somewhat more common on the market, likely because of later issues having higher print runs, the earliest issues remain highly uncommon on the market. Near Fine, save small stain to back wrapper, trifle edgeworn. Saddle-stapled [octavo], printed textured cardstock wrappers, 36 pp. Seller Inventory # 1173
