About this Item
Charles Dickens wrote The Life of Our Lord during the years 1846-1849, just about the time he was completing David Copperfield. In this charming, simple retelling of the life of Jesus Christ, adapted from the Gospel of St. Luke, Dickens hoped to teach his young children about religion and faith. He wrote it by hand, exclusively for their eyes alone. He strongly expressed his desire that the manuscript remain in the family and he would not have it published in his lifetime. After, his death, he requested it not be published during the lifetimes of his children. For 85 years, his family followed his wishes. When his youngest son, Sir Henry Fielding Dickens, died in 1933, he did not impose any restriction on the publication of the manuscript, except that proceeds from publication be shared among the family. Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812?1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. To have a new publication 85 years after his death made for a remarkable 1st edition. Book designed by Ernst Reichl. Hardcover has green cloth boards, gold lettering and designs on front and spine, but no dust jacket. Spine has brown shadowbox and front cover displays a faux Charles Dickens' signature. A piece of the spine has torn/worn away at head. Page-edges tinted black. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked. Seldom, if ever, read. No marks of any kind. Copyright 1934. Stated First Edition with 1934 date on title page. True 1st implied. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR. Seller Inventory # 007761
