About this Item
First Edition ('First printing in America June 1930'). This book seems to have everything, not only its dust jacket but beneath that a glassine jacket that looks as if it's been there for a while so it may have originally come with the book, although it seems a bit like overkill. I didn't see any other copies of the book that had a glassine jacket. The black covers can be seen in the photographs provided. They are very clean. The silver and red label on the front doesn't show any wear. It does seem to change color a bit depending on how the light hits it. It's either solid silver or a coppered silver. The spine label has vertical rubbing at its center (see fifth photo). Some of the rubbed color actually can be seen on the inside of the glassine jacket. The black cloth has very little wear, the bottom right-hand corner has a tiny spot of rub-through. Actually that's the totality of the wear. The book is then square, straight, and very solidly bound throughout. The pages are exceptionally clean. I scrolled through slowly and came upon only two speck-sized spots on the margin. The pages are also in very nice condition, not creased, no dogeared corners. The middle page edge is deckled. The title page is cut shorter at the bottom. The only marking in the book is a tiny stamped '29' on the back of the blank rear end paper. There are no attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The glassine cover has a 1 inch loss at the top of the spine and a tiny chip at the bottom of the spine. Also that strip of color that came off the spine of the book. The jacket is in very nice condition, particularly taking into account its age. It has a few very tiny chips off the bottom edge of the front, there's also a small tear there. There's a tiny loss off the top edge of the rear where it meets the middle edge. There is also some scuffing on the middle edge and a few tiny holes. The jacket is pretty clean. The flaps are in nice condition. The book was a Book-of-the-Month Club SELECTION for June. That's not the same thing as being a Book-of-the-Month Club book. The jacket is not price-clipped, not clipped at all. The price is near the bottom of the front flap ($3.00). From the Preface: 'The word liberty which I have with some reluctance chosen to stand as the title of this book, means so many things that it often means almost nothing. I have attempted no abstract discussion or definition but have endeavored to show what those who have most thoughtfully considered the subject throughout the ages have meant by Liberty. I have also discussed the subject in the light of the general philosophy of life and of the psychological and historical facts which form the background of such discussion.'.
