The photograph on the rear panel of the dustwrapper shows the author receiving his DSO from Lord Alexander. General Rudnicki served mainly on the Italian front in WW1 in the ranks of the Imperial Austro-Hungarian Army, and later in the Polish cavalry on the eastern frontiers. In WW2 he commanded the 9th Lancers Regiment. After his escape from a German prisoner-of-war camp he was appointed Chief of Staff of the Polish Underground Organisation in Lwow, later becoming General Officer Commanding 1st Armoured Division, North-Western Europe.
