SCARCE FIRST EDITION ON BIRTH PLANNNG AND PRODUCING MONSTERS This is the very rare first edition of a book that is commonly found in revised editions. It was famous and infamous, in part because of the plates of malformed births. It is a fascinating work dealing with embryology, reproduction, sex determination and pre-selection and all manner of medical knowledge and popular superstition about how to produce healthy offspring. Dr Millot indicates the procedure to be followed to procreate boys or girls, and offers recipes against sterility, impotence and malformations. 'I do not believe I can render a greater service to humanity [he writes], than to give it the mode of procreating the Sexes at will; for this knowledge also has its Moral goal: it is, I believe, the only means of increasing, if it is possible, the tenderness of Fathers and Mothers, and the attachment of the Children for them, because the parents who will have only Children of their choice, will see them with continual satisfaction'. "The nationalistic goal of creating the new citizen of the republic figures prominently in conjugal hygiene literature as well. For example, in 1800 Jacques-André Millot publishes L'Art de procréer les sexes à volonté in which he cites the utility of the French nation as the goal that motivates him to write his treatise on reproduction (ix).23 Millot's work also bears witness to the persistence of the notion that it is possible for the married couple to manage their fertility in order to produce a child of the desired sex, yet by placing his work under the sign of national utility, Millot explicitly politicizes the medical discourse on conjugal hygiene. More comprehensive in this respect are François-Emmanuel Fodéré's Les Lois éclairées par les sciences physiques (1799) and Louis-Joseph-Marie Robert's Essai sur la mégalanthropogénésie, ou l'Art de faire des enfants d'esprit qui deviennent de grands hommes (1801), two treatises that restructure the marital relationship according to a republican model.24 In both cases, the authors assign particular importance to the role conjugal relations play in shaping the physiology of the French nation." Michael E. Winston: From Perfectibility to Perversion / Meliorism in Eighteenth-Century France: Conjugal Hygiene at the Dawn of the Nineteenth-Century (2005), pp.143-144 "Curieux traité de Jacques-André Millot (1738-1811), chirurgien-accoucheur de Marie-Antoinette et des duchesses d'Orléans et de Bourbon. Seller Inventory # 63122
