About this Item
First Edition and One of only 600 copies on handmade paper. Tall 8vo, publisher's original binding of yellow cloth backed in tan burlap, in the dustjacket. xiii, 96 pp. A fine copy with light evidence of age to book and jacket. FIRST EDITION. In 1911, Lawrence was introduced to Edward Garnett, a publisher's reader, who acted as a mentor and became a valued friend, as did his son David. David Garnett wrote the preface to this book, a reminiscence in which he tells that the stories and sketches in LOVE AMONG THE HAYSTACKS were written by Lawrence in July and August of 1912 and then passed on to Edward Garnett. David Garnett read the book in manuscript form when it was written, and had been with Lawrence into 'The Chapel Among the Mountains;, had slept out with him in 'The Hay-hut Among the Mountains' and writes that the tickling of the hay, the crashing thunder, and the bitter cold of the winds sweeping off the glaciers al came back to him. These two events reflected in stories within the book. The others are 'A Reminiscence' by Garnett, 'Love Among the Haystacks' and 'Once', both by D.H. Lawrence. Seller Inventory # 32571
