First Edition, complete in three volume. Medium 8vo (230 mm); [xii], [622] + [viii], 666 + [x], 648 pp. Original brown cloth, gilt lettering to spines, edges of which are very slightly rubbed. Three portrait frontispiece, five plates and a text illustration, all plates behind slightly toned tissue-guards, with some offsetting to opposite leaf in some instances. Neat former ownership sig with date to front endpaper in vol I. A Fine set. Morley was an English Liberal statesman, friend and official biographer of Gladstone who gained fame as a man of letters, particularly as a biographer. As a long-time member of Parliament (1883 95; 1896 1908), he was Chief Secretary for Ireland (1886; 1892 95) and Secretary of State for India (1905 10), and was raised to the peerage in 1908.
