viii, [9] - 256, [2] pp. Adverts last 2 pages. Folding map as frontis. 12mo. 7-3/4" x 4-7/8" Hale known for his anti-slavery stance, with especial interest in that subject with respect to the state of Kansas, and this piece no doubt issued in time to take advantage of the 1854 opening of settlement of that [future] state. This copy with a nice period association, showing 3 ownership signatures of W. C. Webb, presumed to be the attorney of Crawford County, Kansas & prior Representative to the Kansas State Legislature (1869-70). Minor extremity wear. Spine slightly sunned. A VG copy. Original publisher's red cloth with gilt stamped spine & boards stamped in blind 1st edition (Sabin 29624, who, incidently, spells 'Kansas' correctly in his listing & without the Z as used by Hale, who, he tells us in his preface, did so intentionally).
