256 pages, plus folding map and four pages ads. Blind and gilt stamped blue cloth covers are a little rubbed, and they are a bit faded over spine. Gilt lettering/decoration remains good. Corners are lightly bumped, and there is light wear seen at spine ends. Penciled notations are seen on front end leaves. Folding map shows a little missfold on edges, though not affecting map image. A few small foxing marks. Volume remains tight, and is overall clean and intact. Seller Inventory # 040553

Red covers with blindstamped designs on front and back, and gilt lettering and designs on spine. Front edge of spine is torn down its length, and back edge is torn from bottom for several inches. Covers have some small stains and scuffing. Corners are bumped and worn, with material worn off and some splitting. Foldout map is present in front of book and is wrinkled and torn at the upper corner, with a piece missing. Pages have some spotting and foxing. Book is in fair condition. The 6 3/4" x 7 1/2" tipped in folding map of Kanzas & Nebraska is in photocopy facsimile. There is a pencil signature on the ffep dated from Boston in 1857. A very important pre-Civil War item. Foxing throughout. The title page was torn vertically down through 3/4 of the page, but has been professionally mended without tape. Covers are soiled & dull with light wear to extremities & soft corners. Good, sound copy of a rare title & noted by one authority as the first printed book in the territory. W-C 239a, Graff 1709. Folding map as frontis. 12mo. 7-3/4" x 4-7/8" Hale known for his anti-slavery stance, with especial interest in that subject with respect to the state of Kansas, and this piece no doubt issued in time to take advantage of the 1854 opening of settlement of that [future] state. This copy with a nice period association, showing 3 ownership signatures of W. C. Webb, presumed to be the attorney of Crawford County, Kansas & prior Representative to the Kansas State Legislature (1869-70). Minor extremity wear. Spine slightly sunned. A VG copy. Original publisher's red cloth with gilt stamped spine & boards stamped in blind 1st edition (Sabin 29624, who, incidently, spells 'Kansas' correctly in his listing & without the Z as used by Hale, who, he tells us in his preface, did so intentionally).
