About this Item
Octavo. 272pp. Rebound in brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Publisher's device on title page. Subtitle: A necessary profile of 700 years of role history. Publication of her dissertation and recorded in the NS bibliography. This inquiry into the roles of Jewish actors in the theater starts with a chapter covering the time from the 13th to the 18th century with Jewish actors predominately playing villains. Chapter two covers the second half of the 18th century marked by the Jewish fight for humanitarian conditions. Chapter three looks particularly onto the year 1912 featuring the so-called Salon-Jew as a caricature and its anti-Semitic trends due to the easing of restrictions for Jews by the state. The time of the bourgeoise revolution in chapter four sees the Jewish actor revert to comical roles and stoic hero. The second Reich in chapter five describes the Jewish actor as the newcomer who has come into money, followed by the turn from the 19th to the 20th century with Jewish actors playing roles defined by racial attributes and anti-Semitism. The so-called System Time (Systemzeit) after W.W.I. sees the Jew again as demonic type, justifying his rise in society, and the last chapter covers the time around 1933, the Jew as political schemer and the rise of state sponsored anti-Semitism. Laid in a 14 page copy on dissertations in the Third Reich by Rolf Seeliger, 1966. Text in German. Small dealer sticker on inside front cover. Block browned. Binding in overall very good, interior in good+ condition. Seller Inventory # 45594
