From the Introduction: "The personages introduced are taken from life, and are put down with a free hand as the writer saw them at the time, one of them still coloured by the fantasy she evokes. The sketches necessarily vary with the varying moods which one brings with him to Nature, and which sometimes colour and distort Nature herself. But if in their entirety they convey in any small degree the author's slowly matured conviction that external Nature has a lesson of obedience and love behind all her aberrations and laws, and whispers that 'God is in his world' to those who are receptive and attentive, they will have accomplished the only purpose that the author had in his mind." Condition: Clean front cover; the green cloth on the spine has partially faded; there is a large, light stain at the bottom-right corner of the back cover. Sharp corners. Bright gilt top page edges. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are clean and nearly appear unread with no notable issues found. Name/date (1903) written in pen on the front pastedown.
