"The decadent, the revoltè, the man with a new vision, a new way, a finer perception, is always a danger to the community of dullards, to the stratified hierarchy of saintly, academicians and embalmed mediocrities. Benjamin De Casseres, 1910 JOHN MARIN belongs to that generation of artists who span the gap between the 19th and 20th centuries. Like his contemporary Henri Matisse, Marin's achievement, both its strength and limitations, cannot be fully understood without a knowledge of the extent of his connection with the older culture of the late 19th century. Yet, with along with Matisse, his ultimate accomplishment is uniquely 20th-century. Looking over the large numbers of John Marin's works, a few things emerge from the beginning which remain true to the end. At 41 he started as a landscapest, expanding into cityscape, and only really essayed into the realm of figure painting. In addition whatever the subject's his intent was not to render the outer structure of reality, but to use the real world as a vehicle to express inner feelings.
