First edition thus. Cloth-bound; hardcover; large quarto (37cm x 28cm x 2.5cm); pp. xxii, 120. English text with a new introduction and numerous engravings on steel and wood. Bound in publisher's original green cloth gilt; a.e.g.; patterned endpapers; half-title; 4 full-page plates; 72 in text wood engravings. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure. Slight marks to covers. Spine ends and points slightly rubbed. Contents complete and largely very well-preserved with some light browning and spotting to endpapers. Scarce. Notes: Charles Wilson's work, presenting a pictorial and verbal overview of the city of Jerusalem. With four full-page engravings depicting Jerusalem and its environs: Views of Jerusalem as seen from the summits of Mt. Scopus and Mt. of Olives; Bethany; and view of Mt. of Olives as seen from Mt. Zion. With numerous wonderful in-text illustrations, representing gates, monasteries and churches, people, costumes, and markets in Jerusalem and its vicinity. In 1864, Captain Charles Wilson arrived in Jerusalem leading an engineering team. For decades, he worked on behalf of the British government and army as an engineer, land surveyor, and archaeologist.
