About this Item
1954. Third impression. 288pp., 12 colour plates, 32 black and white plates, 2 diagrams and 2 maps. Ian Melville Stephens (1903-1984) was the editor of the Indian newspaper The Statesman (then British-owned) in Kolkata, West Bengal, from 1942 to 1951. He became known for his independent reporting during British rule in India, and in particular for his decision to publish graphic photographs, in August 1943, of the Bengal famine of 1943. This work is part travel-book and part autobiography. As well as describing his travels, there are many sympathetic studies of simple folk, such as his employees, or people he met in far-off places on the way. There is an interesting chapter on the origins of the Kashmir dispute, and the part played in it by Lord Mountbatten. The book is bound in the original light-blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition with light bumping to the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is slightly faded. The top corners and top of the spine are bumped with some nicks at the top of the spine. There are two tears of up to about 1/2" on the top and bottom front edges and a tear of about 1 1/2" near the bottom of the front fore edge. Seller Inventory # gIndiaEtc06
