Ashel Backus was ambitious to break out of poverty as he worked for local ranchers was a honyocker to them for being a homesteader plowing up the rangeland. Caught in the middle took lots of courage and resourcefulness as the few feud between rancher and farmer came to a violent climax as he fought to save his family.
