About this Item
8vo. [1], 2-5, [3] (pages of publisher's advertisements), [5], vi-xx, [1], 2-394, [5], 6-131, [3] pp. Later quarter red calf over decorated paper boards with the spine in five compartments, gold lettering and gold decorations on the spine. Decorative endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with a folding map. Bound with an appendix that has its own title page, the appendix published in 1833 and contains extracts from General Stanhope's manuscript letters. The War of the Spanish succession is regarded by some historians as the first "world war" as it was a global conflict that involved several world powers fighting on land and sea. General Stanhope was perhaps the most important British military commander in the war. This title is quite difficult to find in the first edition. Moderate wear to the extremities, a bookplate and sticker ghost on the front pastedown and a few leaves have a faint dampstain to their top edge. Seller Inventory # 000011375
