About this Item
Small octavo. 9 lithographed plates, plus title page and rear wrap, which were once the original envelope, and were at some point side-sewn and reinforced with paper at the spine. Plates clean, though one has a small pencil notation, and a few of the plates are trimmed close to the edges, with no loss. A few mild stains. Overall in good condition. Harte 's searing verse was intended as a skewering of anti-Asian sentiment, particularly on the West Coast during the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad and other infrastructure projects in California. In effect, however, the general public didn't "get" the joke, and the racism Harte detested was somewhat inflamed, rather than suffocated. It is perhaps notable that this Chicago imprint of 1870, a year before the Great Fire, is not noted in the Checklist of Ante-Fire Imprints. Seller Inventory # 10229
